Description

We celebrated our 80th birthday in October, 2023. Thank you to you, your parents or your grandparents for supporting us over the decades and we hope you could join us to celebrate. The doors of our much-loved, family shop were first opened in 1958 by childhood sweethearts, Rudolph and Millie Alagich, although the business actually started in 1943 in our garage. We sell and hire Menswear (to size 9X) and Ladies' Pinup clothing (to size 6X) with free, simple alterations...on our 100 year old, Singer treadle machine! We have beautiful, genuine, vintage clothing for hire, including 1940s gangster suits made by Dida (Grandfather), mod trousers from his 1960s buying trip to Carnaby Street and stunning 1950s dresses made by our family. "Food is love" for Slavs so, in the early days of Covid, we opened Broken Hill Vintage Grocer up the road at Hegarty's Hall, mainly so elderly people could easily buy food and local growers could sell their produce, with all proceeds to them. Our specialty ranges included delicious Australian, multicultural, vegan and organic foods. We are Broken Hill proud and stocked award-winning, gourmet products from Broken Hill Olive Grove and Pandora's Palate. Our Clem's Cordials and Bert's Soft Drinks were made from the traditional recipes of Broken Hill's Shelley's Soft Drinks, by the descendants of J.A.M. Shelley. Due to food supply chains being restored, our delicious chocolates melting in Broken Hill heatwaves and growth of our clothing business (hvala puno - thank you very much), grocery products are currently on the backburner...but we have our thinking caps on. We offer AFTERPAY, Paypal, credit and debit card payments and old-fashioned layby. We have styled four generations and the legacy continues... Follow us on Instagram or pop in for some Slav, migrant history in Australia's only heritage-listed city. [Photo prop: Donkies are an important part of European history. This donkey statue is in Baba and Dida's garden - not far from our grapevines, which were planted in 1943! Tradition is our guiding rail through life.]
