Description

Make do and mend! [World War II slogan.]
  • Hello. Our family business started in World War II and we follow the old ways, including sewing by foot treadle on our 80-year-old, Singer sewing machine (pictured).
  • We offer complimentary simple alterations on all garments bought or hired from us.
  • For garments you bring in, we will explain our reasonable price structure before commencing, as it depends on the complexity and time required.
  • Trouser and skirt hems up are usually straightforward but we ask you to try formal garments on with your dress shoes (and a belt for suits).
  • Suit jacket cuffs up may need the lining to be unpicked and resown.
  • We can make many garments a little smaller or a little bigger, although modern seams often have no extra fabric.
  • Fast fashion often uses low grade fabric which temporarily holds its shape because of high elastane (lycra) content but which may unravel when cut. Low quality thread breaks easily, causing bridal beading to fall off.
  • If your online garment purchase arrived in a suprising size, it could be that the manufacture doesn't pay for quality control but produces the "baker's dozen" (buy 12, receive 13) because one is expected to be faulty or the wrong size.
  • In recent years, our work has expanded to include upcycling vintage garments, converting ordinary clothes into cosplay costumes and creating pet ensembles.
  • We hope to see you at the shop soon.
